Nickel is now costing over $44k/metric ton and I think that is the biggest factor in rising stainless prices. What have you done to get material?

It's very frustrating to be on allocation or to have to rely on customers who can arrange preferred pricing (but I have to admit, that is a great strategy). I think there are probably a couple of other possibilities, of which one of them you are actually suggesting which is to partner for raw materials (where you can) and piggyback off of your clients. Another thought is to see if your client can accept a substitute stainless product perhaps with less nickel content (e.g. 2205 for example) but a lot would depend on the end application.

Personally, I don't see nickel coming down too much anytime soon. It has been driven up by hedge funds and demand in India and China. It might be well into 2008 before we see any drastic changes one way or the other.

Anita, Take a look at the 400 series grades, they dont contain the same level of nickel and so the prices are more reasonable. 430 is quite widely stocked by the main distributors. Resistance to corrosion depends on the application but it's good for all but the tough chemical or salt spray environments.

Reading that T430 SST was widely stocked suprised me, I have had some difficult times finding that material in the past, or maybe it was just the requirement for 5/8" thick plate that was the problem. It has been 3 years since I had to find some but I have gotten word recently that our company is expecting another project soon that will require the use of the plate again. Skorr Steel, Brooklyn, NY was the only place I found that stocked it and I still had to wait for a shipment to arrive from Europe. Please share your knowledge of known stocking distributors.

Stuart, I just realized you were posting from England, that is where the T430 SSt came from that Skorr Steel sold to me, it must be more available in the UK than in the US.

Hi Greg, Yes normally I am in the UK but we do a lot of work in the US market and I am currently in Chicago. The obvious answer to your question is dial in the requirement to mfg.com and i am sure it will through up suppliers of 430 but in addition i recall Penn Stainless, CADA, Castle and Alro all carried some 430 in sheet and plate formats. I hope that helps.

Thanks for the tip Stuart, during the short period of time I have been using mfg.com my experience has been limited to machinings and castings, I was not aware steel distribution would be an offering, I will certainly do as you suggested.
