RE: China - the good, the bad, and the ugly
Hi everyone,
I work with all kinds of tooling, be it plastic, die cast or stamping. One item that i came across is a simple stapmed plate with 2 bends and three holes in the center. For my US tooling i would expect one tool, progressive die containing three stations. I found the US quote for this around $25k, but in China, i found they seperated the tooling to three seperate tools, total cost $7.5k.

In asking why the difference in strategy it became apparant that be seperating the tools they could run on lower cost simple equipment..

the part price was also lower, but now with the decline of the dollar to RMB I have to watch out..

Poseym, how has this worked out for you, especially with the dollar in continual decline?

Yes, this is a selfless plug. To be successful with sourcing initiatives in China, companies should consider having someone there 100% of the time who is fully committed to the success of your projects. The common misconception is that "middlemen" take too much of a cut. But there are groups like ours who deliver our customers' target costs at the quality and specifications that are required. If buyers are using MFG.com as a reverse bidding tool, then that is what they will get--price. However, most are now realizing that the cheapest price is not necessarily the lowest cost.

We used to be a paying vendor on the MFG.com site which yielded very little opportunity because the tool itself does not allow us the chance to quantify the project management value we bring. This isn't to say there aren't reputable China suppliers--just that there is immeasurable value in having a team look after your project from beginning to end.

employee Unions are counter productive to every industry and most likely will not be around by the turn of the next century or sooner.
