I'm happen to a manufactory in China dealing with something machining metal components. We have about 20~30 batch parts output to Unit States for several years. Not have heard any problems in the import process yet. But we have own painful one, our VAT rebate canceled.

I am a mfg rep of custom components made in China and we have not had a single issue in the past 2 years with importing parts in either metal or plastic. It is quite easy actually.

Well, no issues huh?
I'm a US suplyer and no I don't have any direct experience with working with the chinese. however, I've been asked by a other tool and die vendors that was going to start outsourcing their die work from china. their first and foremost concern was the fact that you can't work directly with them from the US unless you have a night shift or something and can speak their language. your other option is simple, find A local shop capable of handling your parts, Have your China source directly ship to them and your local US vendor inspects and reworks everything as needed. At least thats what the other buyers are doing. The pricing from china is usually so low you can do the original build there however if you run int even a little problem your screwed unless you have a plan in action before you buy because your purchase from China is going to tax your time limit on the job.
I'm certain the China suplyers know nothing about what they ship is being reworked they've been taken out of the loop because its impractical to even concider sending anything back for just the time alone much less what actualy comes back.
I know of several tooing and parts buyers that do this. It seems to be the norm because you just cant get service half way around the world, you can only get cheap parts.

RE: Import issues - China
ETR,

Service is a relative term, I do much business in US, Central America, and China. All have there issues when it comes to communication, service, quality. If you award work to any business without doing your research into them chances are your going to get burned. Service in China is actually better then 90% of the US companies I've either done work for or placed work with. It typically takes a US company much longer to get you answers when needed then other countries. I contact our factory in CHina or other partner facilities in CHina and have answers within minutes to a few hours but if I contact a US supplier or customer amny take several hours to several days. So it really depends on who you are dealing with and what you definition of service is.

As for quality, I've had bad and good from all counties I've dealt with. Yes if you go place work in a CHina facility without first researching then you have a 50-50 chance, or if you work with a good broker you might up your chances to 70-30, but there are companies like us with our own facilities and own employees that provide great service and quality in a timely manner. We qualify everything before it is shipped, then again inspect to certify when it arrives. Not only for redundent quality check do to workmanship but to goods that may have been damaged in shipping but this is a service we provide that sets us apart from going direct yourself.

We would be glad to provide our services to you or any one you know that might be thinking about off shore sourcing, I believe you would be pleasantly surprised at the level of service and quality you would get.
