Phantom Stock - One of my pet peeves in the electronics supply industry.
For those of you not familiar let me post a quick definition, as best as I can describe it.
Phantom Stock - Simply put, is when a company posts that they have a part in their stock that they clearly do not have. Also when quoting your customer a price from someone elses stock, and claiming it is yours. This is a way for these suppliers to get you to send you their RFQ's.
(and trust me once you send them an RFQ for a part, you generally get swamped with an advertising email every day for the rest of your natural born life...)
Let me explain why I'm posting this, outside of just providing general information to the other members of MFG.
I recently posted an RFQ on MFG.com. In this RFQ I was looking for a Texas Instruments part, that 2 of my customers are in constant need of. This particular part is experiencing extremely long lead times from the factory - up to, and more than one year in some cases. Therefore, I am trying other means to source this product for my customers.
I received 2 quotes so far on this part. One of them appearing to be legit, except the price was a little too high. (which is understandable due to supply and demand.) Unfortunately I had to decline the quote because I would not be within my customers required pricing for these parts.
The second quote I just received today, and the price was excellent. When contacting the supplier, we discovered that the part would not be deliverable untill next year. We then asked the supplier were they quoting off of Franchise stock like Arrow or Digikey, and they said yes. (phantom stock).
I can just as easily call a franchise, and get the same information. The funnier part to me is that I know, for example, Arrow is not allowed to sell these parts to re-sellers. Texas Instruments is being very strict on who they allow to procure these parts right now, due to the high demand. So even if I said, yes a 1 year lead time is acceptable (which is absurd) they wouldn't have been able to buy the parts anyway, to sell them to me.
Anyway, MFG.com's platform was designed to where all RFQ's and quotes are placed with the immediate intent to buy/sell. Thankfully, companies such as the one above, are not allowed to post their stock on here, otherwise you folks wouldn't know who has what. ( and I guess you folks includes me as well ).
Don't get me wrong, when I don't have a part in my stock, I will try to source them for my customers, to try and save them some headaches. It is my job to help them in anyway possible. But I would not quote my customer what they can already do without me.
If anybody else has any comments or experiences that they would like to share, please do.
